The 40-year-old has so far been used in a rotational role with promising Frenchman Alphonse Areola and kept a clean sheet on his debut for the club as they beat Caen 3-0 at home.

Despite his age, the 2006 World Cup winner is convinced he can still play at the top level for years to come.
“In the last few years I have learned that it would be a mistake to set a limit … I thought I would stop at 35,” said Buffon.

“Afterwards, some circumstances made me go on.” I said: “I’m only 38 years old, but at 38 I thought 40 ‘Today I’m still here “.

“I’m sure that the emotions and the life I’ve had, even in the dressing room, are not something I can find elsewhere. I’m not sure that a normal player would have lived this life the way I have.

“You have to accept that life has several phases, and you must never be surprised. So I know that one day it’ll happen, and I won’t be taken by surprise.

“But I also know that everything will be completely different.”
