Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat second-tier outfit Greuther Furth in the first round of the German Cup. The hosts looked set to pull off a shock as they led thanks to a goal from Sebastian Ernst 13 minutes from time, but BVB came fighting back with new signing Axel Witsel grabbing the equaliser deep in stoppage time.
Marco Reus then powered home a winner in the final minute of extra time from Jadon Sancho’s cross to send the Bundesliga side through.
“Furth did incredibly well. They acted very compact and kept their ranks closed,” Reus said. “At times we just didn’t find the courage to play actual attacking football. In the end, we’ll gladly take a dirty win home.”
Coach Lucien Favre spoke of his relief after the game and insisted his side need time to gel.
“This is normal,” he said. “It was tough for us away to a second division team. We are only five, six weeks together. Some players only joined us three weeks ago.
“The most important thing is that we advanced.”
