–CAF runs the rule on the five players who want to rule the continent
VINCENT ENYEAMA (Nigeria)
Nigerian Captain, Vincent Enyeama who plays for Lille FC in France was born on August 29, 1982. Enyeama contributed immensely to the achievements of the Super Eagles in the last ten years. The goal-keeper remains the finest on the continent after superb showings at the Africa Cup of Nations, FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the World Cup proper also in Brazil. He was the pillar behind the Super Eagles success at the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa. He also made a name for himself with Lille in the French “Ligue 1” where they nick-named him “Jesus in goal” as he did not concede any goal from September 15 to December 7; maintaining an eye-popping 11 clean sheets from 16 games and 1035 minutes in total.
AHMED MUSA (Nigeria)
Ahmed Musa, from Nigeria, was born on October 14, 1992. He currently plays for CSKA Moscow (Russia).Musa’s strength is his pace and dribbling runs. He was a member of the Nigerian Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Orange Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013. He also featured at the FIFA Confederations Cup later in Brazil. He is the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup final.
Indeed, his goals against Argentina in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil were exceptional. With CSKA Moscow, Musa won every title in Russia – League, League Cup and the Super Cup during the 2012/2013 season, scoring five times in the process. He remained an integral part of CSKA, especially in the current season where he has featured in almost all the club’s domestic matches and in the European Champions League.
YAYA TOURE (Ivory Coast)
Yaya Toure, three times African Player of the Year, was born in Cote d’Ivoire on May 13, 1983 and plays for Manchester City in England. Since 2004, when he made his debut, Yaya has remained a regular member of the Ivory Coast national team.
In 2006, he appeared for The Éléphants in all three of the team’s matches at its first ever World Cup. In the 2010 tournament, he again appeared in all of Côte d’Ivoire’s matches, scoring the opening goal in a 3–0 win over North Korea.
Touré has represented Côte d’Ivoire in five Nations Cup finals in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. In the 2006 and 2012 editions, the team ended as runners-up. Touré was named in the CAF’s team of the tournament in 2008 and 2012.
He made his third World Cup appearance during the 2014 competition, and captained the team in their opening match, a 2–1 defeat of Japan in which he was named man of the match by FIFA. He also helped the Elepahants to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
At Manchester City, he is a cult figure and has been the driving force for the club. For the current 2014-15 season, the midfielder has found the back of the net five times in 11 games. Touré began his playing career atIvorian club, ASEC Mimosas, where he made his debut at the age of 18.
His performances attracted attention from Europe. Touré played for Beveren in Belgium, Metalurh Donetsk in Ukraine, Olympiacos in Greece, and AS Monaco in France.
In 2007, Touré moved to Barcelona, playing over 100 matches for the club and was part of the historic 2009 Barcelona team which won six trophies in one calendar year. Yaya Touré then moved to Premier League club Manchester City in 2010, where he has since scored a number of key goals for the Citizens – most notable of which were the lone goals in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final and final. Touré has a distinguished international career with 82 caps for Ivory Coast.
PIERRE-EMERICK EMILIANI (Gabon)
Pierre-Emerick Emiliani Francois Aubameyang, from Gabon was born on June 18, 1989. He plays for the Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga and the Gabonese national team.He scored a hat-trick against Niger during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but the Gabon did not qualify. He has however been very outstanding at the club level.
In the 2012-13 season, Pierre-Emerick guided Saint Etienne to the Coupe de La Ligue (French League Cup) and emerged second top scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals. He joined German side Borussia Dortmund in July 2013 and has scored ten times in all appearances. He was a member of the Dortmund side that won the German Super Cup after a 4-2 win over Bayern Munich.
Since the beginning of the current season, Pierre-Emerick has played in most of Bayern Munich matches, thus Helping the team in its bid to retain the League trophy.
The top three nominees will be announced by the Confederation of African Football in the coming weeks, while the winners will emerge at the Glo CAF Awards gala night scheduled for the convention centre, Eko Hotel in Lagos on 8th of January, 2015.
