Celtic Survive Astana Scare To Reach Champions League Group Stage

By James Agberebi:

Despite losing 4-3 to FC Astana of Kazakhstan in the second leg, Scottish champions Celtic on Tuesday qualified for the group stage of the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League, going through 8-4 on aggregate.

Celtic went into Tuesday’s second leg with a commanding 5-0 first leg advantage.

The final result is the highest-scoring aggregate in UEFA Champions League play-off history.

A Kristoffer Vassbakk own goal in the 26th minute gave Astana a 1-0 lead.

Former Manchester City forward Scott Sinclair equalised for Celtic in the 33rd minute.

Astana went 2-1 up through Serikzhan Muzhikov in the 48th minute before Patrick Twumasi added a third a minute later.

Twumasi got his second goal to make it 4-1 to make the visitors nervous, but Celtic’s Oliver Ntcham scored with 10 minutes left to bring the score to 4-2.

And in the 90th minute, Leigh Griffiths was on target for Celtic to end the game 4-3.

Celtic became the first British club to win the Champions League (then known as the European Cup) after they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in the final in 1967 in Lisbon, Portugal.
