CHAMPIONS: Zamalek’s Ohawuchi Scores As Sundowns Win First CAFCL Title

By Adeboye Amosu:

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns won a first CAF Champions League title despite going down to 1-0 defeat in the second leg of their final fixture against Egyptian champions Zamalek on Sunday at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, reports Completesportnigeria.com.
‘The Brazilians’ won 3-1 on aggregate after 180 minutes of exciting football.
Former Nigeria junior international, Stanley Ohawuchi, scored the only goal of the game in the second half.
Zamalek were looking to overturn the 3-0 first leg deficit but the visitors put up a decent performance to deny them the chance of making a historic comeback.
As expected, it was the White Knights who started the game in blistering fashion, trying to score an early goal with the intention of putting Pitso Mosimane’s men under pressure.
Their first real chance of the game came in the 12th minute through Ohawuchi who was put through on goal following a mistake by the Sundowns defence but he directed his shot wide.
Sundowns were forced to make a change in the 29th minute when Ugandan international goalkeeper, Dennis Onyango, was forced to leave the pitch due to injury.
He was replaced by Wayne Sandilands who proved to be a worthy back-up.
The South Africans went close to doubling their aggregate lead with Percy Tau forcing an acrobatic save from Mahmoud Gennesh six minutes before the break.
Khama Billiat also had his deflected shot hit the cross bar in the closing minutes of the first half.
Ohawuchi gave Zamalek a lifeline when he fired home a stunning shot past Sandilands in the 70th minute.
The home side failed to turn the tie around, handing the away side their first African title and South Africa’s first since Orlando Pirates won the Champions League in 1995.
Sundowns will represent the continent in the FIFA World Club Cup in Japan in December.
