Chelsea are hoping to pip Schalke to the signature of Sami Khedira following the announcement he will leave Real Madrid.

The Germany international has been strongly linked with a move away from the Bernabeu since last summer, with the Los Blancos eager to cash in before his contract expires. However, despite genuine interest from several clubs, including the Blues, no agreement with the 27-year-old could be reached and he has ended up being a bit-part player for Real this season. The World Cup winner has now announced he will leave the European champions when his current deal runs out at the end of the season, claiming he feels the time is right.

“This is not a decision against Real, but I want to find a new challenge in my career and continue to develop myself,” he told Kicker. “I’ve had a great time in a great team and I will do everything I can to contribute in the forthcoming weeks.” Reports had claimed that Schalke were leading the race for his signature but Chelsea have long been linked and are confident of hijacking the deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich are also said to be keen.
