Liverpool produced a splendid performance on Wednesday night as they came from behind to advance to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup after a 6-1 rout of Southampton at St. Mary’s.
The win sets Liverpool for a semi-final tie against Stoke, while Manchester City will face Everton.
Sadio Mane scored the Saints’ goal and the opener in the first minute of the match from a cross by Ryan Betrand.
Returning striker Daniel Sturridge scored twice in the space of four minutes; in the 24th and 28th minutes, which took his tally to 44 goals in 73 games for The Reds. The pass from Emre Can was impressive.
Alberto Moreno scored from the edge of the box with a powerful shot but Divock Origi had a touch of the ball and he was credited with it.
Divock Origi left fly a powerful shot to the top corner in the 68th minute after a great pass by Nigerian-born England international Jordon Ibe. He had grabbed his first just seconds after the start of the second half.
Ibe himself got on the scoresheet in the 72nd minute when he cushioned a cross at the edge of the Southampton box and powered his shot beyond Marteen Stekenlenburg.
Origi got his hat-trick two minutes to the end of the match when youngster Smith crossed from the left wing. It became 6-1 in favour of Liverpool.
