Coneygree emerged unscathed following his latest comeback in the BetVictor.com Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday. The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner has been marred by injury problems since his career-defining victory at Prestbury Park, with Saturday’s race just his sixth run since that success.
Nevertheless, the 11-year-old put in a strong showing as he eventually finished third behind Royal Vacation and winner Rock The Kasbah, with trainer Mark Bradstock admitting after the race that the gelding had emerged unscathed.
“He’s fine, understandably a bit stiff, but essentially he’s ok,” Bradstock told Racing UK’s Luck On Sunday.
Bradstock also confirmed he had never considered retiring Coneygree, despite his injury problems and he feels Saturday’s race proved some of the gelding’s doubters wrong.
He went on: “I think his run yesterday put a few people back in their box. I never considered retirement because mentally he is still in a very good place.”
