European champions Portugal were pegged back twice by North and Central American champions Mexico in a 2-2 draw in the second match of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup on Sunday at the Kazan Arena in Russia.
Ricardo Quaresma and Andres Cedric scored for Portugal in the Group A game while Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez and Hector Moreno scored Mexico’s goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s initial shot hit the crossbar then Pepe ‘scored’ from the rebound in the 22nd minute. However the goal was ruled out after the three Video Assistant Referees reviewed it and found out a Portuguese player was in an offside position.
Quaresma’s left footed shot in the 16th minute was off target but there was no stopping the revatilised Portuguese when he scored in the 34th minute after receiving a perfect pass from Ronaldo who had pounced on a loose ball.
Chicharito equalised for the Mexicans with three minutes left in the first half with a diving header.
Southampton defender Cedric made it 2-1 to Portugal in the 86th minute. The right-back picked up the ball inside the box, found himself in a good position and fired in a shot which was deflected past Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Moreno made it 2-2 in the 90th minute off a corner for Mexico with a perfect header when the Portuguese thought they had won.
