Confed Cup: Wolves Crash Despite Win

By Adeboye Amosu:

Warri Wolves secured a hard fought 3-1 win against AC Leopards on Saturday at the Warri City Stadium but were still eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup 4-3 on aggregate.

The Seasiders lost the first leg 3-0 to the Congolese and needed to score four unreplied goals to book a passage to the group stage of the competition.

After a goaless first half, Gbolahan Salami broke the deadlock after restart for the hosts. Their task was however made more difficult as captain of the side Azubuike Egwueke conceded an own goal few minutes later.

That setback failed to dampem the morale of the Paul Aigbogun side as they poured forward in a bid to remedy the situation. Two further strikes by Salami, his second on the night, and strike partner Oghenekaro Etebo could however not salvage the situation for them.

The result put paid to their ambition of becoming the first Nigerian side to win the competition and also marks another disappointing year for the country's representative in continental club competitions following the earlier exit of Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Enyimba from CAF competitions.
