Cooney Pens New Ulster Deal

Scrum-half John Cooney has signed a new contract with Pro14 outfit Ulster to keep him at the club until 2022. The 28-year-old only moved to the Kingspan Stadium from Connacht 12 months ago but he became an influential figure in the side as he scored 226 points in 25 appearances last term.

Cooney has made a good start to the new Pro14 season after he kicked all of Ulster’s points in their opening 15-13 win against Scarlets.

Speaking about his new deal, Cooney, who won his first Ireland cap against Japan in 2017 and also made an appearance against Australia during this summer’s tour, told the club’s website: “I’ve had an unbelievable time here and I’m delighted to commit my long-term future to the club.

“The players, staff and supporters have all welcomed me with open arms and shown me incredible support.”
He added: “The character that everyone within the organisation displayed last year, in challenging circumstances, was really impressive and I’m immensely proud to represent Ulster Rugby.

“Bryn [Cunningham] and Dan [McFarland] are creating a very ambitious young squad and I’m excited about what we can achieve as a group over the next few years, through a combination of hard work and talent.”
