Croatian Football Federation (HNS) President Davor Suker revealed he received “a lot” of messages from thankful Argentinians after their qualification to the round of 16 at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Zlatko Dalic’s men recorded a 2-1 win over Iceland to finish top of Group D with nine points while a 2-1 victory over Nigeria also helped Argentina to scrape through into the last 16.
An Iceland victory over Croatia would have seen the debutants progress instead of Argentina.
“Only Uruguay and us have nine points. We showed we don’t make calculations and the image of Croatia only grew,” former Croatia striker Suker, who scored 45 goals in 69 matches for his country, told Four Four Two.
“I received messages from all over, especially from Argentina.
“From [Diego] Maradona? I don’t want to name, but a lot of Argentinians contacted me, thanked me, said they believed in us.”
Croatia will face Denmark in their round of 16 clash on Sunday and Suker is confident Croatia would be ready for the encounter.
“We are physically ready. It will be very hard against Denmark,” he said.
“The midfield will decide it and we have to play as aggressively as against Argentina.”
