Croatia defender Dejan Lovren has stated he is relishing the chance to face Argentina star Lionel Messi ahead of today’s (Thursday) Group D Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup clash.
Lovren will go head-to-head against Messi at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium with the hope of helping Croatia secure their second win of the tournament.
The Liverpool star was in action as Croatia beat Nigeria 2-0 in their opening game and insists he holds no fear against the five-time FIFA Player of the Year.
“We know how to play against the big teams and we are not scared of them,” Lovren was quoted by liverpoolfc.com.
“They have maybe the best player in the world in Messi, but Iceland showed how to defend against him.
“It’s an honour, of course, to face him. In the Champions League final, I played against Cristiano Ronaldo, few weeks ago it was [Brazil’s] Neymar, now it’s Messi.
“That’s something you want to do from childhood.”
