–Sports Minister rubbishes 2017 Nations Cup hosting rumour

Amidst suggestions that Nigeria is in the wings to stage the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations following Libya’s withdrawal, Sports Minister Dr Tammy Danagogo has quelled such speculation, saying such issue has never surfaced on his table.

“We’ve never discussed such an idea, it has not even come to our notice, not even also to our table”, Danagogo’s Special Assistant on Media, Patrick Omorodion said on Tuesday.

“What is of paramount in our hands right now is ensuring a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the house of football, NFF.

Libya’s withdrawal from hosting the competition forced CAF to open fresh bid for the hosting right of the continent’s biggest biennial football showpiece.

CAF also has opened bid for the 2019 and 2021 editions of the champions which Nigeria’s Super Eagles are current title holders following a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in last year’s final in South Africa.

Nigeria has hosted the tournament twice in 1980 (and won) and in 2000 as joint host with Ghana and finished as runners-up following defeat by Cameroun in the final on penalty kicks.
