Davies Inspired By Captaincy

Everton’s Tom Davies admits wearing the captain’s armband in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal gave him an extra lift. The 20-year-old came through the Toffees’ academy and despite struggling to become a regular under Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and now Marco Silva, he has proved a handy man to have around.

Davies was given the extra responsibility of leading the team out on Sunday at the Emirates and despite them going down 2-0, impressed with his energy from the middle of the park.

It was the second time he has been handed the honour, having led the team in the EFL Cup win over Rotherham.

As a Toffees’ fan, the England under-21 man admits it is something that he has always wanted and is keen to continue with the role.

“Yeah I was buzzing,” he told the Echo. “Obviously as I’ve already said it’s something I’ve wanted since I was a kid and I’ve had the opportunity twice now, one in the cup and one in the league.

“It’s something I don’t want to stop doing so I’ll continue being a voice in the changing room and hopefully grow into the role.

“It gives me a bit of a lift really. Just going into the game I felt that I really needed to bring more and had to step up with being captain.

“All the lads were really up for it and if we’d have taken our chances I’m sure we’d have got a result.”
