The Argentine winger has told friends in Spain that he has accepted a £180,000-a-week offer to join United as De Jong is also wanted.
Bearing news to set Manchester United fans’ hearts a flutter, Spanish football journalist Guillem Ballague waded in on one of this summers’ most protracted transfer sagas to drop a bombshell.
The Red Devils and Real Madrid are apparently close to agreeing a fee for wantaway winger-cum-playmaker, Angel Di Maria.
As usual, with such a juicy scoop – Ballague claims Di Maria has chosen Old Trafford and will wear the number seven following discussions early next week .
And vice-chairman Ed Woodward was last night in talks with Real Madrid over a £50million deal after Di Maria told the European champions he wants wear the famous No.7 shirt.
Woodward is desperate to push through the deal. And LVG has also made it clear that he wants former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong to join his red revolution before the transfer window closes.
De Jong, who is 30 in November, doesn’t fir the age profile laid down by United’s owners.
But Van Gaal is adamant that paying AC Milan £8m would be wise business on the evidence of the opening day defeat to Swansea.
