Former Nigeria international Joseph Dosu has expressed delight following the impressive performances of Super Eagles players in the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League this season, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Alex Iwobi scored his first goal of the season in Arsenal's 4-1 Champions League away win against Basel in midweek, which helped them finish first in their group.
Also on target last week was Kelechi Iheanacho in Manchester City's 1-1 home draw against Celtic.
In the Europa League, John Ogu and Anthony Nwakaeme were instrumental in Hapoel Be'er Sheva's progress into the round of 32.
Also in the next round in UEFA's second-tier competition are Belgian clubs Genk with Wilfred Ndidi, and Gent who parade the quartet of Moses Simon, Rabiu Ibrahim, William Troost-Ekong and Anderson Esiti.
Reacting on the performances of Nigerian players in European competitions this season, Dosu stated that it will rub off positively on the chances of Nigerian players winning awards and in good shape for international engagements.
"It is good we are seeing Nigerians back to where we belong in this big competitions, the Champions League and the Europa," Dosu told Completesportsnigeria.com.
"We've seen Nigerians win these two competitions in the past, the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses.
" I think it is a good one but it is the end that justifies the means. But Nigerians are happy that our players are in big competitions like this and maybe in the next Africa Player of the Year award, one of them will be in a strong position to win it.
"Also I believe the Super Eagles coach (Gernot Rohr) will be pleased with the performances of the players as we look ahead to next year's World Cup qualifiers."
