DStv Basketball Title Excites Mark Mentors Boss

—Champions Qualify for FIBA-Africa Club Championship

By Bamidele Boluwaji:

Mark Mentors coach Peter Ahmedu is excited and gearing up for the continental challenge after his team on Friday defeated Savannah Conference leaders, Kano Pillars, 79-66 to win the 2015 DStv Premier Basketball League inside the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

Speaking after the game, Ahmedu said they will return to prepare well for the Continental Championship while thanking supporters, players and the coaching staff for working hard to clinch the title.

“I must thank our supporters, players and the coaching staff for working hard to win this title, we are going to make sure we prepare well for the Continental Championship,” the Mark Mentors coach told completesportsnigeria.com.

The new champions ended the first quarter with a convincing lead of 25 points against the 16 recorded by the former champions while the second quarter saw the Mentor boys taking advantage of their supporters to maintain their impressive performance in the second quarter to win 16-14 and ended the first half with 41-30 points.

The third quarter was however not different from the opening quarter but Pillars were able to reduce the points to 20-15 while the last quarter ended in favour of Kano Pillars but the 18-21 points effort was not good enough to see them retaining the title they won last year at the same venue.

With the result, Mark Mentors will now represent Nigeria in the FIBA-Africa Club Champions Cup as winner of the DStv sponsored league.

Playing in the final also gave Kano Pillars advantage to return to the continental tournament.

Completesportsnigeria.com can report that the third place game saw Gombe Bulls beating home side, Union Bank of Lagos, 63-53 points.

It was a disappointing season for the Atlantic Conference teams after they all failed to finish among the best three teams in the league.
