D’Tigress Chase Afrobasket Title, Play Guinea Thursday

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, are hoping to do the nation proud at the 2015 Afrobasket for Women which takes off in Cameroun on Thursday, completesportsnigeria.com can report.

The coach Scot Nnaji-led team who won silver at the just concluded 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville, having lost 57-73 to Mali in the final, will be banking of their participation at the Games to excel in Cameroun.

D’Tigress who left the country’s shores on Tuesday for Cameroun, will play in Group B where they will face Algeria, Angola, Senegal, Guinea and Egypt in the preliminary stage.

The Nigerian girls who defeated Mozambique as hosts in 2003 to win the FIBA-Africa Championship will also be hoping to emulate their male counterparts, D’Tigers, who recently won the Afrobasket in Tunisia.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Nnaji said he was optimistic that the girls would improve on their performance at the All Africa Games in Congo.

“The Afrobasket for women has finally come which we have been preparing for and we are going there with the hope of winning it,” Nnaji told completesportsnigeria.com. “I am happy that the All Africa Games came at a time like this because it has helped us to use the tournament in Congo to prepare for the Afrobasket.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria will play Guinea on Thursday in their first game and Nnaji believes that a win in the game will help the team.
“It is our first game and we must work hard to make sure we win because a victory in the game will give the players the confidence they need to march on,” he added.
