Eagles Fall To Guinea, Crash Out Of CHAN; Tunisia Through

The home-based Super Eagles have crashed out of the Africa Nations Championship after losing 1-0 to Guinea in their final group game on Tuesday.


stats-chan-2016Guinea join Tunisia, who beat Niger Republic 5-0 in the other group match, in the quarter-finals from Group C.

The early part of the game saw Guinea go all out in search of an early goal but were thwarted by a well organised Nigerian defence.

Nigeria started getting back into the game and on 18 minutes were awarded a free-kick close to the edge of the 18-yard box, but Chima Akas blasted it over the bar.

In the 20th minute, Nigeria were awarded another free-kick right on the same spot as the earlier one but this time, Mohammed Usman's attempt came off the wall of the Guineans.

Guinea had a free-kick of their own after Austin Oboaroakpo committed a foul, but the effort was blocked by Nigerian defensive wall.

Guinea launched a counter-attack and almost scored on 34 minutes, but Ikechukwu Ezenwa made a good save.

Osas Okoro almost put Nigeria ahead on 38 minutes after beating two markers but his left-foot strike went inches wide.

Nigeria made a first half change as Bature Yaro was introduced for Usman on 43 minutes.

Guinea finally opened the scoring in the 45th minute through Ibrahima Sankhon.

Prior to the start of the second half, Chisom Chikatara replaced Paul Onobi.

In the 61st minute, Nigeria made their final substitution, bringing on Bright Onyedikachi for Adeniji.

Onyedikachi had his first chance in the 66th minute when he headed Akas cross but his effort missed target.

In the 74th minute, Onyedikachi had another chance, but headed off target.

Nigeria had a free-kick after Okoro was fouled, but Matthew's shot sailed over the bar.

Guinea almost doubled their lead on 82 minutes, from a free-kick, the strike was well saved by Ezenwa.

Onyedikachi came close to level for Nigeria on 84 minutes, unfortunately the chance was headed over the bar by a Guinean defender for a corner-kick.

A minute later, Okoro's shot from outside the box went inches off the post.

Guinea came close to make it 2-0 in the closing stage of the game but the effort missed the target.
