By Mumini Alao in São Paulo:
ERSTWHILE Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has charged the team to show the “Nigerian character” in their crunch game against Bosnia Herzegovina in Cuiaba on Saturday.
Siasia is here in Brazil as delegation head of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), but he remembers his days as an international with nostalgia.
“(Current Eagles coach) Keshi is my colleague, and I don’t want any comments I make (about the team) to be misconstrued,” Siasia told Complete Sports. “But I agree with the general observation that we didn’t play our best against Iran and we need to improve against Bosnia Herzegovina.
“Everybody has an opinion about who should play or not play, but the players who finally get picked have more to prove than anybody else. The whole world is watching them and they must defend their ratings as top professionals.
“During my time in the Eagles, we fought with everything and even when we lost a game, our opponents knew they had been through a battle. The (present) players must show that kind of character and I know that Nigerians will appreciate them no matter the result.”
Siasia was a member of Nigeria’s Golden Generation Super Eagles that secured the country’s first World Cup qualification at USA ’94. He scored Nigeria’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Argentina in a first round game. Nigeria will face Argentina again in her last group game at Brazil 2014 on Wednesday.
