Echiejile Apologises For Red Card Vs Lille

By Johnny Edward:

Nigeria left-back Elderson Echiejile is disappointed at his expulsion in Monaco’s 4-1 defeat away to Vincent Enyeama’s Lille on Sunday at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The defeat saw Monaco lose grip on second place to Olympique Lyonnais on goal difference and they may face a struggle now to hold onto third.

The sending off was Echiejile’s second in his career in Europe and the 28-year-old admits he let his team down after he was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Corchia in the 65th minute.

“I’m sorry for letting my teammates down,” Echiejile said on his official website

“We have five finals to claim the UEFA Champions League automatic spot and I believe in our group.”

Monaco, already trailing Lille via Morgan Amalfitano’s opener, appeared to have been given a lifeline into the contest when Renato Civelli was sent off eight minutes into the second half but their one-man advantage had lasted just 10 minutes before the Super Eagles left-back got the marching orders.

Monaco, meanwhile, have now won just once in six outings, with that victory ironically coming away to champions Paris Saint-Germain.
