–Eagles defender eyes victory over Old Lady in UCL clash
By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles defender Elderson Echiejile is hopeful Monaco can inflict another surprise defeat on Juventus in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg clash at the Olimpico stadium.
Echiejile was however, quick to add that the Italian league leaders remain favorites to progress as both sides are seeking a first appearance in the semi-finals in more than a decade.
Both sides meet in Turin in the first leg of their last-eight tie, with Juve heading into the fixture on the back of a shock 1-0 league defeat at the hands of beleaguered basement club Parma and Monaco reeling in their 3-0 win over Caen last Friday.
Echiejile who will be making his fourth appearance in the competition this season if he gets to play and his 14th since he made his debut in the 2010/2011 with Sporting Braga told Complete Sports exclusively that the Leonardo Jardim’s men can progress.
“Of course it is achievable. All we need to do is to stay focus in both legs. Juventus are in a greta form in the Serie A and in Europe but we can get a good result from both leg and progress through”, he told Complete Sports exclusively.
In the second round of the competition, Monaco progressed on away goals in a 3-3 aggregate draw with Arsenal, are on an eight-match unbeaten run in Ligue 1 following a 3-0 win at Caen on Friday.
Echiejile however played down Monaco’s awful record of having never won in Italy. He said: “In the group stage we set a new record by not conceding a goal in six games we could as well rewrite our history by winning n Italy,”
