Echiejile Rejoins Monaco For Pre-Season, Coy On Career Future

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles defender, Elderson Echiejile, has rejoined AS Monaco for the forthcoming French Ligue 1 season, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Echiejile was part of Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, but didn’t feature in any match for the Super Eagles who crashed out at the group stages of the tournament.

“I’m back to my base for preparation for the new season which comes with its challenges,” Echiejile told CSN.

“Being part of the World Cup squad was a big achievement but not playing was not my making.”

Echiejile who has played on loan at Standard Liege, Sporting Gijion, Sivasspor and Cercle Brugges is however noncommittal on his future plans.

“I still have a contract with AS Monaco and I’d be deciding that in the coming days,” he said.

The 30 year old still has a year left on his current deal with AS Monaco.

  • I always wished I had the magical powers to merge Taiye Taiwo and Elderson Echiejile into one player!

Think about it, the attacking flair and powerful left foot of Taiwo with the defensive discipline of Elderson; what a left full-back that would have been!

    Well, back to reality now.

Whatever Elderson does from here on, we fans wish him all the best. He has served the national team with dedication, pride and maturity and his contributions will not be forgotten.

If however, at the ripe age of 30 he still feels he has unfinished business in the national team, then, so be it.

But I think with Elderson, it is the end of an era….
