Edo State FA Set To Honour Ighalo, Osimhen, Ikhana

All is now set for the maiden edition of the Edo Football Association Awards ceremony on Wednesday, December 30, 2015.

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo will be among the stars to be honoured on Wednesday at the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre, Benin City by the Edo State Football Association at the Awards ceremony.


Chairman of Edo FA, Frank Ilaboya, disclosed that the ceremony is organised to celebrate Edo State-born indigenes who contributed to the growth and development of football in the state and beyond.

“Ighalo is very happy with the recognition from his state and even though he won’t be able to attend the ceremony because of the ongoing EPL season, his wife will receive the award on his behalf,” Ilaboya said in a release.

Ighalo’s nomination comes in the Player of the Year award (foreign-based) category. The Watford striker has currently scored 14 Premier League goals this season.

Other Edo state sports personalities nominated for the awards for their outstanding contributions to sports include Golden Eaglets striker at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Victor Osimhen (Young Player of the Year award) and former Enyimba coach, Kadiri Ikhana (Coach of the Year)

Aside the trio of Ighalo, Osimhen and Ikhana, others shortlisted for various awards include Nigeria Football Federation boss Pinnick Amaju (Football Personality of The Year); Chris Okaeben (Administrator of The Year), Austin Eguavoen; (Football Ambassador of Edo) and Otamere Nelson (Referee of The Year).

Special recognition awards would also be given to Alabi Aisien, Sebastian Brodericks-Imasuen, Amodu Shaibu, Abel Ehigie, Faith Irabor, Larry Izamoje and several other personalities.

Tana Aiyejina (print), Saliu Ibrahim (radio) and Oni Obadan (television) are the nominees for the Media Persons of the Year.

Former Governor of Mid-Western Region, Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemudia (retd) will be honoured with a Lifetime Award as well as Channels Television boss John Momoh.
