Eguaveon: Super Eagles Defence Strong, Rohr Will Have Selection Headache

By Adeboye Amosu:                                                                                                                                                                                                                Former Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguaveon is happy with the quality of defenders in the team and reckons that current handler of the team Gernot Rohr faces a tough task in picking the required number for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Nigeria qualified from a tough World Cup qualifying group that included African powerhouse Cameroon and Algeria with defenders William Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun and Shehu Abdullahi among the top performers.

The likes of Tyronne, Ebuehi, Ola Aina and Bryan Idowu have also shone for their respective clubs and are strongly pushing for places in the team ahead of the mundial.

Eguaveon, who aside from managing the team represented the three-time African champions at two FIFA World Cups, also stated that the defenders will play a key role for the team in Russia

“I like the defenders we have at the moment. It’s a combination of young, versatile, strong and experienced players,” Eguaveon told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“Shehu, Troost-Ekong, Balogun and Elderson are good  defenders who will do well for us in Russia.

“I like the fact that we also have the younger ones. Aina, Tyronne and Idowu have strong football background and are also playing regularly at their clubs

“They will play a big role in whatever we are going to achieve in Russia and I don’t envy Rohr at this moment because he sure has a difficult task in picking may be seven that will be in the final squad.”

The truth is always hard to admit because of the lashes that comes with it. The midfield plus mikel is the only hope at the moment. I dont want anyone to think we very super when without mikel who will retire any soon we find ourselves in disarray from attack to Goalkeeper… Mike is key to this team and we need to focus on who will replace him when he leaves.

its a shame u don’t know cerezo is a full back as well a versatile one who can play defensive midfield and when he say d defenders are good boy take it they are good..check their stats during d qualifiers d goals they concede were PKs not even clear decisions

Eventually it will come down to survival of the fittest. It is in early June that we will really know who is fit, consistent, and skilled enough to fit into a system the coach has on his drawing board. My worry is that the Super Eagles defence is building its attack only from the right flank through Shehu. It makes us very predictable. Echiejile used to defend as well as advance forward from the left side as well. I don’t know why currently that side appears to be weak. There must be a left-footed fast wing back to break up the opponents attack from the right. Somebody like Ben Iroha. Come the month of May, and many will be called, but few will be chosen.

    • I would suggest Joel obi be tested in that regard, only good coaches would think in that direction.

Jeol obi will be perfect in DAT position the Ghana coach deployed kwadoh asamoah to left back in Brazil 2014 and he did very well and days were he plays for juve most times j.obi versatile and agility could be d key
