Eguavoen “Feels Great” To Be Included In Controversial NFF Legends XI

By Bamidele Boluwaji: Former Super Eagles defender Austin Eguavoen has told Completesportsnigeria.com that he feels happy to be picked among the NFF Legends XI at the Aiteo/NFF Awards award held on Monday in Lagos.

“Well, I feel great to be recognised by the FA and that shows they valued all I contributed to football as a player and coach,” the former Nigeria captain told CSN.

“It is truly a new innovation and I want to believe that we are going to see more that can encourage the younger players to give their best when they are still active.”

When asked if he thinks he actually deserved to make the Legends XI list, Eguavoen replied: “I wouldn’t say because I am not the one that initiated i!t but one thing I can tell you is that I worked really hard to give my best to Nigeria as a player and as a coach. And I want our current players to always have at the back of their minds that whenever they are called upon to play for this country, they should give their best.”

The NFF Legends XI for the first Aiteo/NFF Awards, which has caused some controversy, is made up of Ann Chiejine, Austing Eguavoen, Christian Chukwu, Uche Okechukwu, Felix Owolabi, Segun Odegbami, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Adokie Amiesimaka, Mercy Akide-Udoh and Thompson Usiyen.

The make-up of the NFF Legends XI has been trailed by criticism following the exclusion of some names like the late Stephen Keshi, Rasheed Yekini and Muda Lawal.
