Egypt Make U-Turn, Set To Submit Bid For AFCON 2019 Hosting

The Egyptian Football Association has made a dramatic U-turn over its stance on the Africa Cup of Nations – AFCON 2019, just eight days after opting out of the bid to host the continental showpiece.

The EFA previously ruled itself out of stepping in to replace Cameroon as hosts of AFCON 2019, and the latest development follows a meeting between the EFA president Hany Abo Rida and the president of Confederation of African Football (Caf), Ahmad Ahmad.

“We’re preparing a file to send to CAF and we’re waiting for formal approval from the government,” EFA’s Ahmed Megahed told BBC Africa about their latest decision concerning AFCON 2019.

(CAF) officially stripped Cameroon off their hosting rights for the AFCON 2019 which will be played in June 2019 after they failed to fulfill the necessary organizational requirements.

Megahed said Egypt is better placed than anyone else on the continent to host the expanded AFCON tournament next June and this comes after northern Africa neighbours, Morocco opted out of a bid.

“We have good facilities and none of the other African countries can be ready in this short time,” he explained.

“We have stadiums in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Port Said.”

Egypt are ready to organize the next AFCON fulfilling all the terms and conditions required by CAF between the 15th of June and 13th of July, per the statement.

  • Good, although I think Egyptian soccer fans are the most volatile and unpredictable in Africa, especially if you’re playing against the Pharaohs. Just the faces and atmosphere in the stadium alone, and the opposing team might consider conceding the game to Salah and his men. Lol. That’s my only problem with Egypt opting to host.

Haha Kem you make me laugh true talk though! But this might be another fake report because after a week now we will hear that Egyptians deny this report! Lol Africa no serious

    • The images of the Egyptian fans lighting touch lights straight to Daniel Akpeyi’s eyes in 2016 AFCON qualifiers is burnt in my conciousness forever!!

Akpeyi handled the situation well and he was outstanding in that match. Shame he has become public enemy number one!!

Anyway, moving on; yes the Egyptian fans can be intimidating. Imagine Nigeria Vs Egypt AFCON quarter final…..
