Mohamed Salah was on target for Egypt in his first game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia but failed the Pharaohs who fell to a 3-1 defeat against the hosts on Tuesday.
The result leaves Hector Cuper’s men on the brink of elimination from the competition.
Uruguay and Saudi Arabia will clash in the other group fixture on Wednesday.
Russia took the lead two minutes after the break from an own goal conceded by Egypt captain Ahmed Fathy.
Dennis Cheryshev doubled Russia’s lead in the 59th minute for his third goal of the competition.
The third goal arrived three minutes later with Artem Dzyuba firing a delightful effort home for his second goal of the competition.
Egypt were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute after Salah was fouled inside box with VAR needed to confirm the foul took the place inside the box after the referee had initially called for a free-kick.
Salah duly stepped up and put ball into the net for his side’s only goal of the game.
