Ekoku: Missed Chances Cost Super Eagles Vs Argentina; Rojo Handball Not Penalty

By Adeboye Amosu:

Former Super Eagles forward Efan Ekoku has blamed the team’s inability to convert their chances in the 2-1 defeat to Argentina for their early exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Gernot Rohr’s men needed just one point to book a date with France in the second round but went out of the competition after Marcos Rojo struck late in the game.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead from a sumptuous finish in the first half but the Super Eagles rallied back after the break with Victor Moses converting from the spot.

Substitute Odion Ighalo missed two glit-edged chances for Nigeria in the closing stages of the game, while Oghenekaro Etebo also came close to hitting the back of the net with a free-kick.

“Missed chances for Nigeria cost the super Eagles. Rojo’s hand ball not deliberate so right decision. If the ball is diverted away from Ighalo and a chance is taken, then more chance of a pen,” Ekoku, who was in Nigeria’s 1994 World Cup squad, tweeted.

  • African teams have disappointed in this tournament.

4 out of 5 dropped out in the first round – not good enough.

We need to have a radical rethink of how – as a continent – we apprach future world cup tournaments with a view to doing the continent proud in 2022 and beyond.

It is back to the proverbial drawing board for African football administrators.

  • I disagree with you Mr Ekoku if that incident had happened to Nigeria I am very d ref will give it.

  • *sure

My anger and disappointment with Gernot Rohr is not about the fluffed chances by Igahlo. We DIDN’T have to win the match. At 10 minutes to the end, Argentina removed a defender and brought in an attacker. That was INTENT TO SCORE AND WIN THE MATCH. WHAT DID OUR GERNOT ROHR DO TO COUNTER THIS? NOTHING! HE stood there listlessly watching and then made two substitutions ONLY AFTER Argentina had scored. I don’t care what anyone says. Argentina did not win the match yesterday, Gernot Rohr by his inactions lost the match for us.

  • After the equalizer, there was no shame in packing the bus.
Bring in John Ogu for an attacker, bring Awazie.
    Play 5-5-0.

    Win at all cost. Mentality.
ROHR does not have that mentality, he figured out we will put up with his ” young team” nonsense.

Am ok he want to steak around, but he needs some talking to.
Again we need assistants that can contribute something and have the courage to do so.

Why should Ekoku say that was not a penalty? What is penalty? @Tayo’s question is relevant and us directed to Efan Ekoku. If it was Nigeria, won’t the have given it? Yes! yes!! yes!!! They would have given it with a yellow card.

Look at that Argentina crowd. Very many. They were all over the stadium. Look at the Nigerian crowd. Few. I don’t think we were up to 109. So you think FIFA will allow such a crowd to just go home? No possible. Add to it Messi to go home? No possible. That crowd and Messi means money for FIFA and an indication that it was a successful world cup. Amaju Pinnick cannot do anything. His salary needs to be paid too. So @Efan Ekoku, it was a penalty but expediency demands that it should be denied and Argentina stays.

      Oh! Bros. God bless you.
Splendid analysis who would ignore over 15000 spectators for 109.
Argentina everywhere, how did they got there.
You mean the referee doesn’t like his life.
      Eagles tried.
Every part of the globe knew we were robbed.

  • If it wasn’t a penalty ehiltgive Japan a penalty against Colombia? Was it deliberate? Come on Efan you bloody wrong.
