Ekpo Loses WBA Title Fight To Zeuge By Unanimous Decision

Former Nigeria's Olympic boxer, Isaac 'Grenade' Ekpo in the early hours of Sunday lost by unanimous decision to Germany's Tyron Zeuge who defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) super middlewight title  at the MBS Arena in Postdam, Germany, Completesportsnigeria.comreports.

The fight which started at 12.50am Nigerian time after some undercard bouts was stopped in the fifth round due to a cut above the eye of Zeuge.

The unbeaten German shaded the opening rounds but clashed heads with Ekpo the 2004 Olympic Games star for Nigeria, in the third, opening the large cut over his right eye.

Accidental head-butt, said the referee, who allowed the fight to proceed.

Encouraged by blood streaming from the wound, Ekpo dominated the next round as Zeuge held on with his vision impaired.

The ring doctor checked the cut in the fifth round, and then the bout ended after he  checked it again.

The judges awarded it 49-46, 48-47 and 49-47 to Zeuge, making his first defense of the title he won by beating Italy's Giovanni De Carolis last November at the same venue near Berlin, his hometown.

Zeuge, trained by former two-time world champion Juergen Braehmer, improved to 20-0-1 (11 KOs), while the Don King-promoted Ekpo, who had initially thought he had won by Technical Knock Out (TKO), dropped to 31-3 (24 KOs).

"You train for 12 weeks for such a fight and then that happens. We're fighters, we want to fight," Zeuge said after the fight against Tyron Zeugethe Nigerian.
