Ekpo: Super Eagles Great Vs Algeria, Shouldn’t Fear Argentina

By James Agberebi: Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has hailed the performance of the Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw against Algeria in their final African Group B Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier in Constantine on Friday.

The Eagles were without the likes of skipper John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Moses Simon, Mikel Agu and Odion Ighalo.

John Ogu give Nigeria the lead on 62 minutes after sending in a superb curler into the top corner.

But in the 88th minute, Yacine Brahimi equalised for Algeria from the penalty spot after a controversial penalty was awarded for a non-existent foul.

“I want to say a big congratulations to everyone of them who played against Algeria,” Ekpo told Completesportsnigeria.com. “It is difficult to pick a particular player that was the most outstanding. Everyone of them was impressive and I say kudos to them.”

Ekpo, who was in the Eagles squad that won bronze at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, praised the players who replaced their injured colleagues.

He said: “Also, let me congratulate the players who were brought on for the injured players. They never fizzled out against Algeria nor were they complacent because we had qualified already. They came to play and felt they are also good like other regulars. I believe they played to the best of their ability.”

And looking ahead to the international friendly against Argentina in Russia on Tuesday, Ekpo said: “Argentina is a different ball game.

“Nothing but their pride is at stake and we should expect their very best players against Nigeria. I will advise our players not to go on to the pitch and be looking at Messi, they should go and play their own game and it will work for them. They should follow the instructions of the coach and I believe if this is done, we will see a game from our players.”

  • This number 22 guy be anywhere close to the world cup team

  • Please that 22 guy should be dropped oo

  • Who is the mask player?
    22 did what NNE ?

  • “Mikel Agu”?? You guys at complete sports really think that team “missed” him?

  • dey didnt confuse me enough dat startin line up is nt realy strong 2 compete against d best in world..algeria was nt jst gud

  • i hope u guys have seen that Ezawa don’t have the quality to lead us to word cup no attack me oo because am saying the truth let them go and look for a goal keeper or bring back Vincent Enyeama am not talking about the penalty but check out from that corner kick u will know what am talking about as for those players on the pitch hmmmmm i dey come i will complete am later

    • Yes Ezenwa Is Still Hav A Lot To Lean,he Cant Lead U To W/Cup

    • We need to work on our goal keeping department. If not the hardworking of our defense..the score line would have been a different thing.

    • Bro, even the way he handles aerial ball from set pieces (eg coner kicks) was not encouraging. He miss timed most always, instead of punching such aerial balls, he wants to catch them, thereby making silly mistakes. Either the ball drops on opponents head or on the floor for scrambling, which isn’t good for eighteen yard box. The goal keeping department should be alert to his flaws and train him.

    • May be you should come and replace him. He is part of the team that qualified Nigeria; he deserves it. Definitely, he will become better with passage of time

  • Algeria coach failed to beat the bench warmers…

  • and ezenwa will be in goal against Argentina too??????????????

  • I think d 5 and 6 is d best combnation for nigeria

  • For dem were good to go

  • We Need Keeper, Ezenwa Is Nt Worth It

  • We need keeper

  • Which match was Ekpo talking about? Is is the one I watched yesterday against Algeria? If it is, then he’s either stroke the player’s ego or something. Only the regulars (Shehu, Ekong, Balogun, Ndidi, Iwobi and maybe Aina) showed Super Eagles class. Others should were below par. Nwakaeme (No 22) and Ogu should forget about the world cup. Ezenwa should sit down on the bench and always watch from there. Rohr should please get Enyeama and Ikeme please. If these 2 or at least 1 don’t go the world cup, we will not pass the group stage, no matter the strikers we parade up front.

  • The number 22 was poor. Our keeper was very poor. Its time to try the plateau united keeper, alampasu or uzoho

    • We should really try alampasu or uzoho, ezenwa has been under performing he was just lucky because the defence was good

  • When we are calling for Enyema in absent of Carl some people were saying he want to come & reap where he did not sow. After playing Argentina then we know what to do, cos the teams we met in qualifier will be different from the teams we will meet in world cup. Best hand & best legs needed.

  • That penalty awarded to Algeria was a scam! The Referee robbed us, and as far as am concerned the Super Eagles won, even though they played below expectation.

  • I thank God that our coach is Rohr and he needs quality not politics. Whether you like it or not Enyeama will be back before the world cup. With Enyeama there was no doubt. We can’t be putting a goalie that will put the defenders under pressure

  • Vincent should be Nigeria no1 keeper if he can meet the conditions given him by Rohr. Getting a Club, regular playing time and so on.

  • The most important thing is we didn’t lose that game. We all know we Stand a better chance with our full squad but given the fact we fielded average players in vital positions I strongly feel we did well. Would’ve won the game if not for the late penalty

  • Oyekru is going to be a heat in super eagle. I saw a glimpse of what he will bring to the team.

  • ahahahahahahahahahah
