–Cautions AFN on importation of foreign athletes
A former Africa 200m gold medalist, Uchenna Emedolu has described Blessing Okagbare as the new face of athletics following her double gold medals feat at the just concluded 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Okagbare hauled the 100m and 200m gold medals as Team Nigeria finished on 8th position at the games.
Emedolu who won gold medal in the 200m at the 2003 All Africa Games in Abuja posited that Okagbare was in spectacular form at the games, hence her double medal feat.
“Blessing was in outstanding form, she was exceptionally good and I’m really happy for her”, starts Emedolu.
“She’s still young, has many more years in front of her and I believe barring injury, the way she’s going, she will make Nigeria proud at the 2016 Olympic Games.”
The bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens reckons that much as Nigeria looks good to raising the standard ahead the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN should concentrate on domestic talents rather than importing foreign based athletes.
“We should concentrate on our home grown athletes, they will give us what we want, they will excel.
“Emphasis should not be on importing athletes from abroad.
“Look at the athletes at the Commonwealth Games, save for the triple jumper (Tosin Oke) who won a silver, all the other ‘imported’ athletes never won anything for us”, Emedolu said.
