Emenike, Utaka Advance To Turkish Cup Semi-finals

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike was a second half substitute for Fenerbahce as they defeated Mersin Idmanyurdu 4-1 in Thursday’s Turkish Cup quarter-final second-leg game at the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium to advance to the semi-finals with a 6-2 aggregate win.

It was the Yellow Canaries’ first game since the armed robbery attack on their team bus following the 5-1 victory over Rizespor in the league.

The Super Lig champions who won the first-leg 2-1 in Mersin downed their visitors with a brace in each half from Dutch winger Dirk Kuyt and Caner Erkin before Marko Futacs scored a consolatory goal in the 72nd minute. Emenike replaced Kuyt at the resumption of the second half.

In the other quarter-final fixture, John Utaka played 64 minutes for Sivasspor who edged out Kayserispor 3-1 on penalties after aggregate scores stood at 2-2.

Emenike has only found the back of the net four times in 23 league appearances this season and has come under heavy scrutiny by the media and the home fans of Fenerbahce. Utaka has three goals in 17 appearances for the 12th placed team.

Fenerbahce face Bursaspor in their next game on Monday in the Süper Lig while Sivasspor hosts Balıkesirspor on Sunday.
