Some of the best players at the 2014 World Cup are goalkeepers and one of them is Vincent Enyeama.
And in recognition of his extremely important contributions to Nigeria’s progress into the Round of 16, the Lille star has been voted by Complete Sports readers as their Player of the Month for June, the month the Super Eagles played all their World Cup games.
For the first time since we started the Player of the Month honours in January, the award has been won twice by one player. Enyeama also won it in April, beating Obafemi Martins and Kenneth Omeruo by a large margin.
This time too, the former Enyimba star won overwhelmingly, claiming 66 per cent of the votes to beat Ogenyi Onazi (17 per cent) and Osaze Odemwingie (17 per cent), both of whom also posted brilliant World Cup showings.
Enyeama continued his Ligue 1 form in Brazil as he pulled off save after save to keep Nigeria in the competition.
The Lille shot stopper kept 21 clean sheets in the French top flight last season and was one of the best keepers in Europe in 2013/2014. He did not disappoint in Brazil as he kept two clean sheets in four matches, making stunning saves to deny Iran and Bosnia to get the Super Eagles into the Round of 16 for the first time since 1998.
Even when his error led to France’s first goal in the 2-0 second round defeat, Nigerians refused to blame Enyeama, citing the numerous occasions he rescued the team with his saves.
The former Enyimba star is such a fans favourite these days that he could do no wrong. He played every minute of Nigeria’s four games in Brazil.
