Etim Esin Tasks Government On Okwaraji

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Flying Eagles and Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin is urging the Federal Government to immortalise the
late Samuel Okwaraji who died on August 11, 1989.

Okwaraji passed on while playing for the Super Eagles in an Italia ’90 World Cup qualifier against Angola at the
Lagos National Stadium, Lagos.

Esin who admitted he was a very close friend of the one-time Sampdoria FC of Italy dazzling midfielder bared his
mind to Completesportsnigeria.com

“We are marking the death of Okwaraji but what has the government done for his family after so many years of
his demise,” Esin asked rhetorically.

“In Nigeria, heroes are not honoured. I learned his family was given a paltry sum sometime ago. I feel the family
deserve more. The government should immortalise him.”

Okwaraji went back memory lane to describe that moment that Okwaraji gave up the ghost.

“I was very close to him when he fell to the ground. I think Siasia was there too.

“We all panicked and gestured to the medical team to attend to him but it was a shock to us that the game was
his last assignment for Nigeria,” Esin explained.

  • The Country shouldn’t name any stadia or building after any individual, dead or alive.
What should be done is to renovate our stadia (what a dream!!!!) and name a section after the (an) individual, that way you keep the lagacy of the individual.
Now that it is not an idea shortsighted adminitrators are interested in though.
Why is it now after 25 years they are talking about Sam, a lot of our countrymen who have given blood and sweat have died with nothing done to either help them when alive or recognise them in death.
Administrators who do not recognise the need for Data, talkless of players welfare. An FA that is non functional (with no website for information on the national teams). No training grounds – Teams are queing to use other UK training ground.
Poor scouting, poor tournament organisation, poor man management .
So with all these issues/problems/wahala/gobe and a lot more not mentionned or remembered – therir next agenda at the next AGM will be to name a rat infested, run down National stadium after a GEM WHO DIED ON NATIONAL DUTY. Please dont disrespect the name.
