Chairman of Enyimba International Football Club Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu has roundly condemned the unsporting behavior of their hosts Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia ahead of the CAF Champions League second round, second leg meeting between both teams,Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Speaking during his team’s first training session on Tuesday evening at the Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet in Monastir, Agwu revealed that the Tunisians had resorted to using underhand tactics to frustrate and intimidate his team.
The Nigerians were not met at the airport by officials of the host team and when they eventually showed up, they were driven for four hours to their hotel for a journey that normally took a little over an hour.
Enyimba was also forced to charter a fleet of taxi cabs to take the team to their first training session after Etoile du Sahel refused to provide them with transportation, a clear violation of CAF rules.
"We arrived here about 10:25am (Tuesday). We were not received at the airport - this was surprising," Anyansi-Agwu told Completesportsnigeria.com here in Monastir.
"They were supposed to be there to receive us. It took quite a while before they brought two buses to us.
"From Tunis to Sousse is about 100 kilometres – it's a journey of about 35 to 40 minutes. Even if we were staying in Monastir, it's an additional 20 kilometres from Sousse. It took us a complete four hours to get there, for a journey that should take us one hour 20 minutes maximum."
The Enyimba chairman further lamented: "We were supposed to train at 8pm, but at 7:30pm, they didn't provide us with any means of transportation. So we were forced to charter about 6 taxis to go to the training ground. There was nothing else we could do, that was the only option we had to bring our players to train."
The match between Etoile du Sahel and Enyimba comes up on Wednesday at 7pm.
