Europe stormed back to win all four of the afternoon foursomes at the Ryder Cup to take a 5-3 lead over USA at the end of day one. Team Europe had struggled in the morning and trailed the Americans 3-1 after the opening fourballs but they hit back in superb fashion at Le Golf National to win all four matches of the afternoon session.
Thomas Bjorn’s team dominated the foursomes with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose beating Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler 3&2, before Rory McIlroy and the reliable Ian Poulter saw off Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 4&2 to level the overall score at 3-3.
Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren then picked up an impressive 5&4 win over Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson before Open champion Francesco Molinari and English star Tommy Fleetwood beat Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas by the same scoreline.
The stunning run of victories marked the first time Europe had ever won all four foursomes in the Ryder Cup and it was also the first time since 1989 that a European team won all four matches in a single session.
European captain Bjorn used all 12 of his players across the first day in France and he was obviously delighted with how his men responded after falling behind in the first session.
He told Sky Sports: “There were a few guys sitting out this morning who you would normally see in the first session and they were keen to go out and prove we are a team and we’ll do it with all our players.
“We wanted to get everyone out on the golf course today. Even the players in the morning, they came out and showed quality and class.
“They were class in what they did and Tommy [Fleetwood] stood up and holed those putts on 15th and 16th to send belief through the rest of them.”Fastest Paying Betting Site in Nigeria: Grab your 140% First Time Deposit Bonus Now — www.Sportybet.Com Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
