Everton 2-2 Arsenal: Sub Olivier Giroud to the rescue with last-gasp strike

Substitute Olivier Giroud rescued a point for Arsenal with a last-gasp equaliser after Arsene Wenger’s tactical gamble had backfired at Goodison Park.

The Gunners boss gambled on new signing Alexis Sanchez playing upfront and Mesut Ozil wide of the left but the tactical plan backfired.

Ozil switched off at a free kick and Seamus Coleman rounded off a sweet move by heading the ball past Wojciech Szczesny in the 19th minute.

Steven Naismith doubled Everton’s lead just before half-time when he was allowed to latch onto a pass from Romelu Lukaku despite looking marginally offside and slide the ball past the advancing Szczesny.

Sanchez was hooked at half-time and replaced by Giroud and the move almost reaped an immediate reward as the French striker fired just over the bar.

Arsenal carried a greater threat as Everton were content to defend deeply and Giroud had two further chances to grab a lifeline but on both occasions he failed to hit the target.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey gave Arsenal hope when he fired home from close range in the 83rd minute and Giroud headed home in injury time.
