Villarreal youth team midfielder Samuel Chukwueze said he was disappointed to miss the Flying Eagles’ match against Guinea Bissua on Saturday due to club commitments, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Flying Eagles began their quest for a place at next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger Republic with a 2-2 first-leg away draw against Guinea-Bissau on Saturday.
Wasiu Alalade scored a brace to give the Flying Eagles a 2-0 first half lead before a brace also from Mada Alberto Pereira levelled the score for hosts Guinea-Bissau.
Chukwueze, 19, who was a member of the Golden Eaglets squad that won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, explained that his promotion from Villarreal’s U-19 team to the team B meant his season was prolonged as he had to participate in their play-off match as the cadet Yellow Submarines bid to make it to the Segunda division.
“I’m very disappointed to miss the (Guinea Bissua) match. I spoke with the coach and I explained to him that I won’t be available because of our (Villarreal) play-off match,” Chukwueze said.
“I thought I would be available when the U-19s season ended but I was promoted to the team B, which is a good thing. I hope to help my team in the play-offs and then return to Nigeria to join the Flying Eagles camp.”
Chukwueze was a member of the Flying Eagles squad under Emmanuel Amuneke that was eliminated by Sudan in the qualifiers for the 2017 U-20 AFCON in Zambia.
