Ex –U-23 Eagles Goalkeeper Daniel Joins Gombe United

Former U-23 Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Daniel, has linked up with Nigeria Professional Football League side, Gombe United Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Daniel is making a return to the Nigeria top flight after spending two seasons with Orlando Pirates in the South Africa Premier League.

His contract with Pirates was cancelled early this year due to lack of game time.

He was part of Rangers side that won the NPFL title in the 2014/2015 season, the Flying Antelopes first in over three decades.

Daniel was Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where the U-23 side picked bronze medal.

The 25-year-old also once had stint with Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan.

Gombe United recently appointed experienced tactician, Ladan Bosso as their new technical adviser.

Hmmmm….this is the first we are hearing of this guy since Rio 2016. So such a hugely talented goalkeeper has been wasting away at Orlando Pirates all these while. I hope he can quickly retrace his steps and find his way back to national reckoning. At the age of 25, he his the best candidate to give Uzoho a run in the SE in the long term, having played for a big club like Enugu rangers, been a former u20 and U23 national team goalkeeper up to olympic level, he has the requisite international exposure to man the posts for Nigeria without fear or jitters. Welcome back Emma. Good to hear about you once more.

That man there is not 25. I don’t like to call out players for age forgery but i knew him when we younger. Started out as a defender.

Well…Im sorry about that…but it happens to be that none of it is my business. I am neither his father nor his mother who would know when he was given birth to. And I suppose you arent any of those either. His offical documents with the government, the FA and FIFA says he’s 25…and thats all that matters

Wow! now this is the sort of news that is sure to bring a smile to my face.

A very decent goalkeeper who would have definitely been considered for national team if not for his failed South African endeavour.

Now that he has signed for Gombe United I hope he can get his career back on track.

It’s not all about playing for the national team; not every player will.

But it was really disconcerting to see a goalkeeper that did so well in the 2016 olympics and the prior Under-23 languishing in league football.

You never know, if he gets up and running, he may well follow in the footsteps of Akpeyi by going to the next Olympics as one of the over-aged players.

Speaking on the effect of Akpeyi’s presence in Rio, Emmanuel said on this platform : “At the end of the day, my hard work paid off and the coaches retained me as number one for the games.

But it is all thanks to Akpeyi whose presence in the team inspired me to fight for my place.

He was also very helpful with tips and advice he gave me before games and even in training. I learnt a lot from and I appreciate him for everything.”

One of my most memorable memories of Emmanuel Daniel was that penalty he saved in the Under-23 Afcon final (a match in which Etebo played like a man possessed)
