FA Cup holders Manchester United have qualified for the fifth round of the competition following a 4-0 thrashing of Championship club Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Goals from Maroune Fellaini, Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Bastian Schweinsteiger sealed the comfortable win for United.
United edged the early exchanges but were unfortunate not to be rewarded with a goal.
In the 44th minute, United deservedly went 1-0 up through Fellaini who headed in Schweinsteiger’s cross.
Wigan almost drew level on 54 minutes following a poor clearance by goalkeeper Sergio Romero which fell kindly to David Perkins but Romero did well enough to keep the ball out.
United doubled their lead in the 57th minute through Smalling who headed in Anthony Martial’s perfect cross.
In the 74th minute, United went 3-0 up thanks to Mkhitaryan who tapped in after a brilliant one-two with Martial.
Schweinsteiger added a fourth for United on 81 minutes with an acrobatic strike off a knock down by Ander Herrera. It was the German’s first United goal in a year.
Martial looked to hear added a fifth goal for United but his effort was disallowed.
