Falcons Star Forced Into Retirement

Newcastle Falcons prop Scott Wilson has been forced to call time on his career at the age of just 24 due to a neck injury. Wilson sustained the injury during the Falcons’ defeat to Exeter in the Premiership play-off semi-finals last May and has now been advised by doctors to call it a day.

The former England Saxons star made his debut for Newcastle at just 18 years of age and he went on to rack up 80 appearances for the club, playing a major role in their promotion back to the Premiership in 2013 as well as their run to last season’s play-offs.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards admits it is a huge disappointment that Wilson has been forced into retirement although he knows it was the right call.

“It’s an enormous shame for him to have to retire at such a young age,” Richards was quoted as saying by the BBC. “But there is a bigger picture to consider from Scott’s point of view in regards to his long-term well-being. It wasn’t an easy moment when he broke the news to the rest of the squad.”

Wilson admits his doctor’s advice came as a “huge blow” but he fully intends to remain an avid supporter of the Falcons.

“I have now been told by the doctor that I have to retire, which is obviously a huge blow,” Wilson told the club website.

“One thing I do know is that I’ll always be a Newcastle Falcons fan, and I’ll be here in the stands at Kingston Park cheering on the lads like I used to do when I was a kid.”
