Rio Ferdinand claims Barcelona star Lionel Messi plays football “like he’s got a remote control in his hand” after he inspired his team to a 4-2 Champions League win at Tottenham.
The diminutive 31-year-old Argentinian was in majestic form at Wembley as he scored two goals and hit the woodwork in a thrilling Group B encounter.
Philippe Countinho opened the scoring for Barca and Ivan Rakitic scored a stunning goal for Ernesto Valverde’s side, while Harry Kane and Erik Lamela replied for the hosts.
However, it was Messi’s second half brace which proved to be decisive, especially his second goal in the 90th minute which ended Spurs’ hopes of snatching a draw.
But it was his overall performance which stood out from the rest and former Manchester United and England defender, turned pundit, Ferdinand, had a clever manner to assess the way Messi performed.
He said: “You have to marvel at this guy here. I feel blessed that I was in this stadium live to be able to watch him. I’ll tell my kids about it tomorrow on the school run.
“This guy—what he does on a football pitch is just ridiculous. It’s like he’s got a remote control in his hand and he assesses the situation and says ‘yeah, right’ just plotting the location and ‘I’ll put the ball exactly where I want to put it on a sixpence’.”
Barca’s win leaves them top of Group B on six points alongside Inter Milan, while Spurs and PSV Eindhoven remain pointless after two matches and with a difficult task on their hands to qualify for the knockout stages.11 BUSINESS NUGGETS FROM SUPER EAGLES BRONZE MEDAL TRIUMPH.
