FIFA U-20 WW/Cup: Spain Eliminate Gallant Falconets To Reach Semis

By Adeboye Amosu:
European champions, Spain beat the Falconets of Nigeria 2-1 to advance into the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Aitano Bonmati put the Spaniards ahead in the 13th minute with a lovely finish from inside the box, her first goal of the tournament.

La Rojita continued to pile pressure on the Falconets afterwards and were denied further goals by a fine save from Chiamaka Nnadozie and the referee’s inability to see that the ball crossed the goal line after hitting the underside of the crossbar in the closing stages of the first half.

They however got their reward when Patricia Guijarro got the second goal deep into first half added time.

The goal was Guijarro’s fifth of the competition which put her in the running for the top scorers award.

The Falconets started the second half the stronger of the two teams and threatened the Spaniard defence than they did in the first half.

The pressure paid off when Peace Efih reduced the deficit in the 57th minute.

They were however unable to find equaliser with Spain advancing to semi-finals where they will face either hosts France Korea DPR.

Yes, gallant Falconets indeed! The young girls performed to the best of their ability, which was not enough at this level. It was evident that with better coaching they could have played a cohesive tactical game, rather than kick the ball aimlessly in front and rush with hope and determination to meet it. They have learnt valuable lessons, no doubt. I hope that some clubs in Europe sign some of them so that they can learn the basics of football under proper coaches.

#ako amadi u said well concerning these girls. They need a Good coach with a sound knowledge of female football. They need to go play in a well organised league where these tactics are well emphasised on a Good training and playing field. Any footballer whether malé oř female need these things to play well.

  • Every time they blame the coach when are we going to have that good coach in Nigeria? Maybe we go for Guardiola if they will still not complain
