Matthew Fitzpatrick has beaten Lucas Bjerregaard in a play-off to successfully defend his Omega European Masters title.
The Englishman became the first player in 40 years to defend the title at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland as he emulated the late Seve Ballesteros’ feat.
Fitzpatrick began the final day in control but his two-shot lead soon disappeared as Dane Bjerregaard, who had started four adrift, went round in 63 to set the benchmark at -17.
Portugal Masters champion Bjerregaard was on the verge of victory but Fitzpatrick’s birdie on the last set up the play-off and another birdie back on the 18th on the first extra hole then sealed the title.
Mike Lorenzo-Vera finished on -15 in third place after the Frenchman missed out on the play-off when he bogeyed the last after finding the water.
Next came Spaniard Nacho Elvira, three shots back on a total of -12, just one ahead of England’s Daniel Brooks, who ended fifth.Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
