Leicester Tigers have been hit by the news Will Spencer has been banned for four weeks for his dangerous tackle against Wasps. The 26-year-old second row was sent off by referee Ian Tempest in the 40th minute of Sunday’s 41-35 Premiership defeat for his tackle on Wasps’ Tommy Taylor, in which his shoulder appeared to make contact with his opponent’s head.
And, following Tuesday evening’s hearing, an independent disciplinary panel upheld the view that Spencer was guilty of a reckless tackle and suspended him until October 16.
Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy was critical of the decision, but Panel chair Euan Ambrose said: “The panel found on the balance of probabilities that this was a reckless tackle that resulted in direct, forceful contact to the head of Tommy Taylor.
“The panel rejected the player’s evidence that any contact with the opposition player had been limited to the top of his shoulder with no contact being made to his head.”
