Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that full-back Raphael Guerreiro has pulled out of the Portugal squad because of a muscle injury. The 24-year-old missed Portugal’s 1-1 friendly draw against Croatia on Thursday with no reason being given at the time, but Dortmund have now revealed that he will not face Italy in his nation’s opening Nations League clash in Lisbon on Monday night because of the thigh problem.
A statement on Twitter read: “Raphael Guerreiro has prematurely left the Portugal squad due to a muscle injury in his thigh.”
It is the fourth muscle issue to blight Guerreiro in 2018 and has forced him to miss a total of 17 matches for Dortmund in the process.
He did play in all four of Portugal’s World Cup games during the summer, but has been replaced by Marcel Schmelzer in the left-back spot at Dortmund so far this season.
