By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international, Friday Ekpo, has stated that the failure of the Super Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets to qualify for their various Africa Cup of Nations tournaments is not a sign that football in the country is in crisis.

On Saturday the Golden Eaglets were eliminated by Niger Republic 3-2 on aggregate in the second leg, second round qualifier for the 2017 U-17 AFCON billed for Madagascar.

The Super Eagles and the Flying Eagles had earlier lost out to Egypt and Sudan in the qualifiers for next year’s AFCON in Gabon and U-20 AFCON in Zambia respectively.

In a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com, Ekpo posited rather the ouster by Nigerian teams should be a sign to start repositioning football in the country.

“To me, I see our failure to qualify for these various tournaments as a sign to start doing the right thing,” Ekpo told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“It is time to start building a strong structure and do things right. We don’t need too much restructuring, we just need to go back to the drawing board and everything will be okay.

“For our junior teams, the coaches are good but we should just start preparation for the next tournaments now.

Ekpo went on to congratulate the U-23 Eagles for clinching the bronze inthe football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

“Let me use this opportunity to say congratulations to the U-23 Eagles and the coaching crew,” the ex-Super Eagles star added.

“Also I will like to thank Mikel for leading the team to finish third. So congratulations to them.”
