Gallas Picks Chelsea As Best London Club Despite Playing For Arsenal And Tottenham

He is in a very select few of players who have played for London's Big Three Premier League clubs but Williams Gallas has picked the five seasons he spent at Chelsea as the 'most special time' of his career despite leaving the Blues in less than pleasant circumstances.

The Frenchman won two Premier League titles and the League Cup with the Blues, for whom he made more than 200 outings after joining from Marseille in 2001 .

In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Gallas said: “I liked all three, but maybe Chelsea was the most special time for me. It was my first club abroad and I had a great time there, winning a few trophies as well.

“And it was there that I first started my international career as well. When you are playing for a big club you expect to lift trophies. When I won the Premier League with Chelsea I felt like the King of England [Laughs]. You want to keep experiencing that.”

His time at Chelsea came to an end when he refused to sign a new contract after saying the club did not offer him enough money. Chelsea, however, did not agree to a transfer request by the player and Gallas refused to turn up at Chelsea after the 2006 World Cup.

On 1 September 2006, he finally transferred to London rivals Arsenal as part of a deal that brought  Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea issued a statement that Gallas threatened to deliberately score own goals if he was not allowed to leave Chelsea but the player vehemently denied the allegations, accusing the club of "lacking class" and "hiding behind false accusations."

Gallas featured in 101 Premier League games for Arsenal before switching to arch rivals Tottenham in 2010, skippering Spurs to a famous 3-2 victory at the Emirates.

The former France international defender also claimed he could have added to his list of London Premier League clubs after talks with West Ham and Crystal Palace but nothing came out of the talks eventually.

“I think my agent actually did talk with [West Ham], but I am not 100 per cent sure,” he reveals. “What I clearly recall, though, is that I had a meeting with Crystal Palace in the summer of 2013. Ian Holloway was manager at the time and we met at the training ground to discuss a deal, but it didn’t come off in the end."
